Location: The Hague
The Hague, once's Gravenhaage, is now in general referred to as Den Haag or, in English, The Hague. The city is home to the Dutch Government and Parliament as well as many diplomatic representations and the Peace Palace, residence to the Permanent Court of International Justice and the Academy of International Law. The Hague is also the capital of the province of Zuid Holland.
The city is quite different from other Dutch cities. It is marked by a certain aristocratic charm and is considered to be the most worldly and elegant town in the Netherlands. Although there is some modern architecture, such as Rem Koohlhaas’s Lucent Danstheater and H. Hertzberger’s transport and planning ministry building, much of the town has an 18C and 19C appearance, with fine, large residences along broad, tree-lined roads and streets. Amongst a number of important museums the Mauritshuis stands out. Its collection includes famous works such as the Girl with a Pearl Earring and the View of Delft by Vermeer, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp and David Playing the Harp before Saul by Rembrandt.
