Location: Rotterdam
Rotterdam is the Netherlands largest city after Amsterdam. The city is an important commercial centre with one of the largest ports in the world. The harbour is located near the mouth of two important waterways, the Rhine and the Maas, and is thus the meeting point of sea and river traffic.

Almost completely destroyed during WWII Rotterdam has been entirely rebuild. The city sprawls over both banks of the river and is linked by bridges and tunnels. It is a dynamic place, with many examples of modern and contemporary architecture. The major attractions include the port and one of the most important museums, the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, with an exquisite collection from the middle ages to the 21st century. Masterpieces include works of Bosch, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Dali which represent a variety of art movements.

Delfshaven, once the fore-port of Delft is incorporated into Rotterdam since 1886 and hardly suffered any damage during WWII. The most interesting part of Delfshaven is the narrow peninsula, bounded by the waters of Voorhaven and Achterhaven. Besides beautiful residential buildings a restored Distilleerketel (an 18C malt windmill) and a part of Rotterdam’s historical museum, the De Dubbelde Palmboom, can be found here. The museum is focusing on the development of Rotterdam and its harbour.
Located in-between is the Oude Kerk (Old Church) founded in the 15C as a chapel, rebuilt in 1716 and restored twice. A plaque recalls the Pilgrim Fathers, who held a service here before embarking on their first attempt to cross the Atlantic on 22 July 1620.
