Nijmegen one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands and the only town built on several hills. The city is a lively university town can look back on 2000 years of history. On the sporting front, the town in known for the Wandelvierdaagse, a four day walking event which starts and finishes in the city.
Artifacts and works of art connected to the long history of Nijmegen can be seen at the Museum Het Valkhof. The museum houses one of the country’s largest collections of Roman art. Other places of interest include the Valkhof, today a park, has it been the site of a castle built by Charlemagne. It took the name of “falcons-court” because Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne bred falcons here for hunting. The Grote Markt (market square) with the Waag (weigh-house) dating back to 1612, the St. Stevenskerk, a large 13C Gothic church, flanked by a massive square tower with an octagonal onion-shaped domed pinnacle are worth a visit.

Around 10 kilometers from Nijmegen lays Groesbeek with its National Bevrijdingsmuseum 1944-1945. The Liberation Museum is situated in the place where Major-General James M. Gavin landed with the 82nd Airborne Division on 17 September 1944. Original films, dioramas and photographs as well as models show events before, during and after the war. They focus on the Operation Market Garden.
The famous Kröller-Müller Museum lays approximately 30 kilometers from Nijmegen in the centre of the National Park Hoge Veluwe. The Kröller-Müller Museum is named after Helene Kröller-Müller. As a member of a wealthy industrial family she had the funds to start her own collection. She collected almost 11,500 art objects with the help of her advisor, H.P. Bremmer. The museums collection is most famous for its works by Van Gogh, Seurat, Picasso, Léger and Mondrian. Besides the indoor museum is also a sculpture garden with a unique collection showing the development of sculptures from the 19th century up to the present.
