Location: Kinderdijk Windmills
According to the legend the mane Kinderdijk (child’s dike) came about when a baby in its cradle was stranded here during the St Elisabeth Flood of 1421.
The 19 windmills that make up the mill network of Molens van Kinderdijk are considered one of the Netherlands most important attractions. The technology of handling water is admirably demonstrated by the installations in the Kinderdijk-Elshout area. They were placed here around 1740 to drain excess water from the polder into the river Lek, which they continued to do until 1950. The site illustrates all the typical features associated with this technology – dykes, reservoirs, pumping stations, administrative buildings and a series of beautifully preserved windmills. Since 1997 the windmills of Kinderdijk are part of the Unesco World Heritage.
