Delft is a typical Dutch town, with a spacious Markt (market) and lovely canals lined with 17C – 18C facades. It is known to be the birthplace of several of the Netherlands greatest artists, scientists and statesmen. It is also known as the place where William the Silent was murdered. Moreover, it has given its name to a kind of pottery, the world famous Delft blue-and-white ware. Places of interest include the Nieuwe Kerk, which was founded in 1381. The most notable feature of the interior is the mausoleum of William the Silent. In 1584 William the Silent, having being declared an outlaw by Philip II, was assassinated in the Prinsenhof. Beneath the mausoleum are the royal burial vaults.

The fames Delftware is still produced today in Delft. The name Delft however began to be known for pottery in the mid-17C. The early designs were influenced by the blue and white Chinese ware which was imported by the East India Company. Examples of delftware of all kinds can be seen at the Huis Lambert van Meerten or in the showrooms of some factories.
