Location: Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the largest city in the Netherlands and the national capital (though not the seat of the government, which is at The Hague) is located at the banks of the rivers, the IJ and the Amstel and connected to the North Sea by the Noordzee Kanaal, constructed for ocean-going vessels. Amsterdam has one of the largest freshwater harbours in Europe. Much of the city rests on piles driven through the marshy surface soil to reach firmer ground below. The lack of tall buildings and wide roads gives Amsterdam a small-town atmosphere.
The city is famous for its many picturesque canals, crossed by around 1000 bridges and in large part lined by old houses. Another of the cities most striking features is the dominance of the bicycles as means of transport.
Amsterdam is a city of great cultural wealth, notable the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum with their magnificent collections of Dutch paintings and 19C art by Van Gogh and others. Other famous museums include the Anne Frank House and the in 2009 opened Hermitage Museum which display as the only venue in the west parts of the magnificent collection of the St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum.
