Location:
Aalsmeer - Flower Auction

The Bloemenveiling (flower auction) takes place every weekday in the buildings of the Verenigde Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer (United Aalsmeer Flower auction). This happens by bringing supply and demand together by means of the auction clock – a fascinating process during which flowers are sold within seconds.

Each day, approximately 19 million flowers and 2 million plants are sold through 13 clocks on the grounds of the Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer, which occupies an area of almost 1 million square-metres (approx. 247 acres). Thus making it one of the largest trades building in the world.

As a visitor you can see the whole operation by walking over a specially designed gallery. Windows allow views into the auction rooms, where the “Dutch auction” takes place. A Dutch auction is a type of auction where the auctioneer begins with a high asking price which is lowered until some participant is willing to accept the auctioneer’s price, or the seller’s minimum acceptable price is reached.
